ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Demetris Nichols was named to the United States Basketball Writers’ Association (USBWA) All-District II Team on Tuesday, March 6. The honor comes a day after Nichols was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection.
Nichols led the BIG EAST in overall scoring at 18.7 points per game and he ranked third conference scoring average. He is also fifth in the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage (86.7 pct.). Nichols has scored in double digits in 27-of-30 games this season and has topped 20 points 14 times. He owns two outings over 30 points, including a career-best 37-point performance against St. John’s, which stands as most points ever scored by an SU player versus a BIG EAST opponent.
The USBWA is broken down into nine districts and members vote for a Player of the Year, All-District Team, and a Coach of the Year in each district. Syracuse is part of District II, which includes schools located in New York, New Jersey, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
The District II Player of the Year was Georgetown’s Jeff Green and Coach of the Year honors went to the Hoyas’ John Thompson III. In addition to Nichols, Antoine Agudio (Hofstra), Michael Haddix (Siena), Lamont Hamilton (St. John’s), Eugene Harvey (Seton Hall), Roy Hibbert (Georgetown), Jared Jordan (Marist), Maureece Rice (George Washington) and Loren Stokes (Hofstra) were picked to the All-District Team.
The Orange is fifth seed in this year’s BIG EAST Tournament and will play 12th-seeded Connecticut at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the first round.
