SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Orange volleyball team will face a challenging schedule in 2007. The Orange will square off against eight teams that participated in the 2006 NCAA Tournament in addition to the strong competition in SU faces in the BIG EAST Conference.
"A strong schedule has been built for 2007, including eight NCAA tournament teams and 23 teams ranked ahead of us,” said Syracuse head coach Jing Pu. “This is what we need to do and do well, so we will return to BIG EAST Tournament and win a spot in NCAA."
The Orange will open the season at the Wisconsin Tournament. Syracuse will begin its 2007 season with a match against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Aug. 24 before finishing the tournament with Gardner-Webb and Wisconsin on Aug. 25. Both Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin are NCAA tournament teams from a year ago.
The Orange will host then host in-state rivals Buffalo and Albany, while participating in the Akron Tournament in between. Syracuse hosts Buffalo on Aug. 28 and Albany on Labor Day (Sept. 3). Syracuse will compete in the Akron Tournament on September 1 and 2, squaring off against Mississippi, Wright State and Akron. Albany and Mississippi both qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2006.
Syracuse will remain home after the Albany match to host the Big Orange Tournament. Syracuse welcomes Princeton, Fordham and Texas Tech to Manley Field House for the two-day event beginning on Sept. 7.
After hosting the Big Orange Tournament, Syracuse will square off at Binghamton on Sept. 11 before ending regular-season tournament play at the New Hampshire Tournament. The Orange will face the host-Wildcats, SMU and Holy Cross while in New Hampshire.
The Orange begins BIG EAST play on Sept. 21, hosting Rutgers. Syracuse will also host South Florida, Georgetown, DePaul, Notre Dame, Marquette, Villanova and Seton Hall in 2007. SU will travel to face Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, St. John’s and Connecticut. Louisville, Notre Dame and St. John’s represented the BIG EAST at the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Orange will also host Long Island, Colgate and Cornell in October as part of an eight-match home stand. The eight-straight matches is the longest stretch for Syracuse under Pu and the most consecutive home contests since hosting 11-straight matches in 1992.
The Orange will wrap up its non-conference schedule with a home match against Siena, who earned an invitation to the NCAA Tournament, on Nov. 6. Syracuse defeated the Saints twice in 2006.
Eight teams will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament to be held on November 16-18. Marquette will host the tournament for the first time.
