Orange Field Hockey Hands Out 2006 Awards

The Syracuse University field hockey team gave out its annual team awards at its banquet. The Abbie Bigelow Award for Courage, given to a player who exhibits courage and desire to excel on and off the field, was give to junior Courtnie Geissler. Seniors Jess Wreski and Michelle Sola were both named the Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year, given to an individual who most embodies the qualities of sportsmanship, leadership, good attitude, cooperation and enthusiasm with regard to the team and program; and through such qualities has enhanced the overall performance of the team.

Geissler played in 17 games as a back and took six shots on goal. She played a major role on a defense that allowed just 1.92 goals per game and 10.9 shots per game.

Wreski ended the 2006 season first on the team in assists (7) and third in points (15). Wreski was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on October 30, following her two-goal performance in SU’s season-finale win against Dartmouth. She was also named to the 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Academic Squad for the fourth-consecutive year.

Wreski started 60 of the 70 games she played in during her career at Syracuse. The Middletown, Pa. native ends her career with 16 points off four goals and eight assists.

Sola was named the 2006 NFHCA Division I All-Region Second Team and All-BIG EAST First Team honors. She ended the 2006 campaign second on the team in points (21), goals (8) and assists (5). Sola was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on September 18, following her two-goal performance in SU’s win at Rutgers. The senior was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on October 16 after recording one goal and one assist in the Orange’s victory against Albany.

Sola started all 77 games she played in during her career at Syracuse. The Blandon, Pa. native ends her career with 64 points off 26 goals and 12 assists.
