Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse women’s soccer team’s 2007 schedule is set. The Orange has a 19 game schedule, 10 of which are against BIG EAST teams. Four of Syracuse’s opponents were ranked in the final NSCAA/adidas National Rankings and four teams will be facing the Orange for the very first time.
Syracuse begins the season with a trip to Michigan over Labor Day Weekend to take on Oakland University and Michigan State. The Grizzlies are the defending Mid-Continent Conference champions and played Notre Dame in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Spartans and the Orange will play each other for the first time on the soccer pitch.
The Orangeopens its home schedule against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 7. The Orange and Knights split the only two games in the series in 2004 and 2005. Rhode Island and East Carolina will also visit the SU Soccer Stadium for the first time.
Syracuse will renew a longstanding rivalry on Sept. 16 when it heads to Chestnut Hill to face former BIG EAST counterpart Boston College. The Orange and Eagles played nine times when BC was still in the league and Syracuse has not won since 2001.
New York State rivalries continue as the Orange visits Binghamton on Sept. 18 and Colgate on Sept. 23.
Syracuse begins BIG EAST play on Sept. 21 at St. John’s. The Orange has five weekend series on the schedule, including home games against West Virginia, Notre Dame, DePaul, Providence and Connecticut, and road dates with Pittsburgh, South Florida, Seton Hall, Marquette and Rutgers. Notre Dame is the defending BIG EAST champion and national runner-up, losing to North Carolina, 2-1, in the final of the 2006 Women’s College Cup. The Irish and Orange have not played since 2002, due to the unbalanced scheduling in the BIG EAST. West Virginia, Connecticut, Rutgers, and Marquette were all participants in the NCAA Tournament last season. The match between Syracuse and DePaul will be the first in the series.
The BIG EAST Tournament will have its familiar 10 team format. The first round games will be held at the higher seed Oct. 30 and Nov. 2. The semifinals and finals will be held at West Virginia Nov. 9 and 11.
