
Watkins Opens Play At Portsmouth Invitational

PORTSMOUTH, VA -- Syracuse senior center Darryl Watkins saw his first action at the Portsmouth Invitaitonal Tournament in Portsmouth, Va., on Thursday, April 6. Watkins, a member of the Sales System LTD squad, played 24 minutes in an 82-77 loss to Cherry, Bekaert and Holland. He contributed six points, two rebounds and two assists in the loss.
Sales System LTD is scheduled to play Norfolk Naval Shipyard on Friday, April 7 at 3:15 p.m.
The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is in its 55th year. It is a showcase for basketball players in their senior year of college.
Watkins earned four varisty letters at Syracuse. He started the last 28 games of his Orange tenure and 67 games in all. He averaged 8.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a senior. His 112 blocked shots set an SU senior record. He completed his career ranked fifth in career blocks at Syracuse (263) and two of the top seven single-season totals in program history. Watkins ranked seventh among NCAA Division I performers in blocked shot average in 2006-07.
