PRINCETON, N.J. – The seventh-ranked Princeton Tigers (6-2) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and didn't look back, beating the 16th-ranked Syracuse Orange (3-5), 12-8, on Saturday, April 7 at Princeton Stadium. The Orange made a late charge with four goals in the final period, but could not overcome the Tigers.
Sophomores Dan Hardy and Kenny Nims paced the Orange with two goals apiece. Junior Mike Leveille added a goal to extend his consecutive points streak to 34 games. Senior Jon Jerome was 11-of-17 on faceoffs. Senior Steve Panarelli recorded his first goal of the season in the fourth quarter and has registered a point in the last two games.
The Tigers got off to a quick start with four unanswered goals in the first 16 minutes of play, two each by Mark Kovler and Peter Trombino. The Orange was held scoreless in the first period, just the third time all season it has failed to record a goal in a period. Hardy tallied Syracuse's first goal at the 6:30 mark of the second period, snapping a 23:30 scoring drought for the Orange. Sophomore Pat Perritt added a goal with 1:12 remaining in the period, his first since the Virginia game on March 3, to cut the Princeton lead to two goals. Kovler scored with 12 seconds on the clock to put Princeton ahead, 5-2, at halftime.
Nims registered the first goal of the second half, but the Tigers came back with two of their own in the span of 45 seconds. After Leveille notched his goal at the 3:47 mark of the third period, Princeton score twice again to go ahead, 9-4. The Orange opened the third period with a three-goal spurt as graduate student Greg Rommel, Nims and Hardy all found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to two, 9-7. Hardy was assisted by junior Kyle Guadagnolo. It was Guadagnolo’s first career point.
The Tigers answered with a three-goal run to put the game out of reach, including back-to-back goals by Tommy Davis.
Kovler and Trombino combined for nine of Princeton's 12 goals in the game. Trombino had a career-high five goals and a game-high seven points, while Kovler scored a career-best four goals.
