WASHINGTON, D.C. -- First Book, Syracuse University and Idearc Media Corp., publisher of Verizon® Yellow Pages and home to Superpages.com®, will host a First Book Speed Read™ at the Schine Student Center on the campus of Syracuse University on Wednesday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the SU Bookstore at the Schine Student Center. Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim is among the participants.
The First Book Speed Read is an interactive and entertaining event that helps raise awareness about childhood literacy efforts. Participants will “speed read” as many words as possible from a children’s book in just 15 seconds. First Book and Idearc will donate 500 books each to three local children’s literacy programs in the names of Coach Boeheim, Kevin Maher and Lisa Miller of Idearc Media in honor of their participation in the Speed Read challenge. An additional 500 books will be donated to the group selected by the winner of the First Book Speed Read.
Children from Martin Luther King Elementary School and Manos Early Childhood Family Center will be in attendance to cheer on the participants and help determine the winner. In addition, each child will receive a copy of Dr. Suess’ Green Eggs and Ham to take home and keep.
First Book® is a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. With more than 46 million books distributed to children in thousands of communities around the country, First Book is a leader in sharing the magic of reading with children in need.
