SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Recent graduate Chris Thorner will represent the United States at the 2007 World Championship of American Football in July. Thorner and Team USA will compete in Kawasaki, Japan from July 7 to 15 to try and win the world championship.
One of 13 players to start all 12 games for the Orange, Thorner collected 15 tackles during his senior season in 2006, including two tackles for loss and one sack. For his career, Thorner recorded 64 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
A total of 45 players were chosen from a pool of 2006 college seniors and represent all levels of college football. NCAA and NAIA schools were asked by USA Football to nominate up to two seniors during the season. That list was pared down by the Team USA coaching staff through film evaluation.
“This team is a complete cross section of U.S. football,” said Team USA head coach John Mackovic. “We’re excited that we are able to blend every level of college football and put together a team of players from schools of every size. We hope to represent our country in the highest fashion and be great ambassadors for football around the world.”
The six country tournament is being hosted by two-time defending champion Japan. Team USA, which is making its first appearance in the tournament, will square off against Germany and Korea in pool play. The other pool will consist of Japan, Sweden and France.
