SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For their hard work and efforts throughout the season on and off the water, seniors Katie Schneider and Karlyn Downing earned national recognition from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Schneider was named a first-team regional All-American, while Downing was recognized as a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete.
Schneider, who was also named to the CRCA Mid-Atlantic First Team as a junior, is the fourth rower in school history to be named a first-team regional All-American on at least two occasions. Serving as a team captain during her senior season, Schneider anchored the varsity eight boat throughout the season. She split time between the 5-seat and 3-seat during the spring season.
Downing is also being recognized by the CRCA for the second-consecutive season. A CRCA National Scholar-Athlete in 2006, Downing rowed in the varsity 8 boat as a senior, sitting in both the 6-seat and 4-seat. Downing is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll on six occasions.
The duo of Schneider and Downing helped lead the Orange in a much-improved 2007 season. The Orange recorded the second-highest point total at the BIG EAST Championship and raised its score than any other team competing. In addition, Syracuse posted a sixth-place finish at the Eastern Sprints, its highest team-finish in school history.
