BALTIMORE, Md. – The Orange’s Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) was named to the Lowe’s Senior All-America Second Team on Saturday, May 26. Rommel was one of 10 senior lacrosse players from around the country to be chosen as finalists for the first Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for lacrosse and the All-America teams were based on the voting results of the finalists. Cornell goalie Matt McMonagle was selected as the award winner by a nationwide panel of coaches, media, and fans.
The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg as an honor for seniors in response to the growing trend of men’s basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. It was expanded this year to include men’s lacrosse, men’s ice hockey, baseball, and softball in addition to men’s and women’s basketball.
Rommel started all 13 games in the midfield for the Orange. He tallied 15 goals and six assists for 21 points in 2007, and paced SU with four man-up goals. Off the field, he was a Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup honorable mention honoree. In addition, he participated in a variety of community service events, including an appearance at Morgan Road Elementary School to help students string lacrosse sticks and SU’s equipment and canned food drive, which benefited the Syracuse Boys and Girls Club and the Food Bank of Central New York.
Earlier this week, Rommel was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large First Team for the third time in his career.
