SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange opens the NCAA Championship Tournament with a first-round matchup against eight-seeded Vanderbilt. The game is scheduled for Sunday, May 13 in Nashville, Tenn.
Syracuse earned an invitation to the NCAA Championship by winning the inaugural BIG EAST Championship Tournament. Syracuse, which currently ranks seventh in both the coaches and media poll, defeated No. 16 Rutgers and No. 8 Georgetown to win the conference’s automatic bid. Vanderbilt earned an at-large invitation bid from the American Lacrosse Conference.
The Orange has won 10 of its last 12 games but had its six-game winning streak snapped by No. 2 Penn, 10-8, on Sunday. Sophomore Katie Rowan leads the high-powered SU offense, which ranks second in the nation averaging 15.47 goals per game, setting school records with 53 goals and 78 points. The Orange defense has improved throughout the season and now ranks 12th in the nation, giving up just 9.41 goals per game.
The Orange is making its sixth trip to the NCAA Championship. Syracuse earned at-large selections in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005. The Orange has lost in the first round in each of its five previous trips, including two times by one goal (2000 and 2005). Vanderbilt is making its third trip to the NCAA Championship in the last six seasons.
The Orange and the Commodores will be meeting for the first time on the lacrosse field. The winner of the game will face the winner of top-seeded Northwestern and Holy Cross on Saturday, May 20. The National Semifinals and National Championship are scheduled for Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.
