SYRACUSE, NY -- Kristof Ongenaet, a native of Belgium who has played basketball the past two seasons for Cuesta College (Calif.), has signed a National Letter of Intent at Syracuse University. Following his two seasons at the junior-college level, Ongenaet will be immediately eligible to participate in the fall for the Orange.
Ongenaet, a 6-8, 220-pound forward, averaged a double-double in both of seasons at Cuesta. He is the first performer in the 42-year history of the program to achieve the feat. He averaged 10.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a freshman with the Cougars. He had a career-high 26 points in a game against West Hills and grabbed a personal-best 25 rebounds versus Moorpark. He was selected the team’s most valuable player and earned honorable mention recognition from the Western State Conference. Cuesta finished 14-18 overall and 8-4 in the league.
As a sophomore, Ongenaet averaged 12.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists an outing. He was named to the Western State Conference first team after helping Cuesta to its first post-season berth since 1999. The Cougars were 17-16 overall and 9-3 in the conference, good for second place.
He enrolled in Cuesta after leaving his home of Ghent, Belgium. He had been a member of the Belgium National Junior Team. Ongenaet leaves the Cuesta program ranked first in career rebound average (11.9) and second in career field goal percentage (.597).
The newest Orange performer gives Syracuse six newcomers. It’s the largest incoming class since 1991-92.
Ongenaet joins Jonny Flynn, Donte’ Greene, Rick Jackson, Antonio Jardine, and Sean Williams in Syracuse’s current recruiting class for 2007. Prior to Ongenaet’s signing, the projected Orange class was rated second, behind only Kansas State, by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.
The National Letter-of-Intent program was started in 1964. Administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), the program was designed with prospective student-athletes in mind. A signed letter-of-intent indicates a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year to the student-athlete, provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.
