SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A regional All-American rower, Alicea Kochis returns to Syracuse as the assistant women’s rowing coach. Kochis was a member of the Orange during one of the most successful eras in school history, helping lead the team to three NCAA Championship appearances, two BIG EAST Challenge titles and one undefeated regular season.
“I am thrilled that Alicea will be joining our staff,” said Syracuse head coach Kris Sanford. “Her experience as an athlete here at Syracuse included being part of the group that brought the team from being mediocre to being one of the best crews in the country in 2001. She knows first hand what it takes to reach the top and will be instrumental in helping to direct the team toward the same success that she saw while rowing here.”
Kochis was a member of the Orange from 1998 until 2002 and was named to the CRCA Mid-Atlantic All-America Second Team in 2001 and 2002. A walk-on with the Orange, Kochis earned a seat on the varsity eight in just her second season and earned the team’s Most Improved Rower Award during her sophomore year in 2000.
The Orange qualified for the NCAA Championship her final three seasons with the team. In 2001, Kochis sat in the six seat for the varsity eight crew that earned the school’s first-ever spot in the grand final at the NCAA Championship. The team also completed a perfect 8-0 regular season, won the inaugural BIG EAST Challenge and recorded a third-place finish at the Eastern Sprints, the highest finish in school history.
In total, Kochis was a member of the varsity eight crew that won two BIG EAST Challenges and the 2000 Georgetown Invitational crown for BIG EAST schools. After completing her career at Syracuse, Kochis spent the 2002 summer at the United States Pre-Elite Development Camp.
From 2002 to 2004, Kochis served as the graduate assistant women’s rowing coach at the University of Connecticut. She has spent the past two years as a non-profit fundraiser at the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund and at Outward Bound.
Kochis graduated from Syracuse in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. She earned her master’s in sport management from Connecticut in 2004.
