Syracuse Men’s Basketball Assistant Coaches Bernie Fine and Mike Hopkins have been rated two of the top 25 assistant coaches in Division I college basketball by Rivals.com. The list features assistant coaches from 20 NCAA teams. Syracuse is one of just five schools to have more than one of its assistant coaches ranked.
Fine, currently the associate head coach at SU, has been a part of every one of Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim’s 31 years at Syracuse as a staff member. Fine’s 31 years rank as the longest active Division I tenure among assistant coaches. Rivals.com cites Fine as a coach known for “X’s and O’s and for his development of big men.” Fine has tutored a number of collegiate postmen and some, including Derrick Coleman, Rony Seikaly and Etan Thomas, have gone on to play in the NBA.
Hopkins has completed 12 seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse. He has a reputation for his recruiting efforts and his work with SU’s guards. Hopkins assisted in the growth of present-NBA guard Jason Hart and helped develop other SU standouts Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin. Hopkins, who was also listed on the top 25 recruiters of 2006 by Rivals.com, played a large role in the 2007 recruiting class, a class regarded as the second-best group in the nation. A former Syracuse captain, Hopkins has additional coaching experience with USA Basketball.
