Syracuse, N.Y. – Universal Studios’ biopic The Express, which details the life of legendary Syracuse running back Ernie Davis, was featured in Tuesday’s USA Today (circulation: 2,278,022).
Actors Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown, who portray Coach Ben Schwartzwalder and Ernie Davis, were interviewed for the piece along with former Syracuse athletes John Brown and Floyd Little.
Aside from discussing the movie, which is scheduled to be released in October 2008, readers get an insight into Davis’s background, accomplishments and personality.
An Elmira, N.Y., native, Davis led SU to the national championship in 1959 and was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. He was the first player taken in the 1962 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins and was traded to Cleveland, but he died of leukemia in 1963, at age 23, before ever playing a down in the NFL.
Filming on the project began in the first week of April in Chicago and made its way to the Syracuse campus on June 21st and 22nd.
