SYRACUSE, NY -- Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross has named Ryan Cabiles director of strength and conditioning for basketball. He will work with the men’s and women’s programs.
“Ryan Cabiles has had tremendous experience with College and NBA players,” noted Syracuse men’s coach Jim Boeheim. “He will do a great job getting our guys ready for the college basketball season.”
“We are fortunate to have a strength and conditioning coach of Ryan's caliber join our program and we anticipate him making an immediate impact," women's coach Quentin Hillsman added. “He did an outstanding job at Portland. It has been great getting to know him, and I think he will be outstanding with our student-athletes.”
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” said Cabiles. “I’ve been given the opportunity to work with a program that has a great history of building champions. I’m looking forward to carrying on the tradition.”
Cabiles has served as head strength and conditioning coach for the 16-sport program at the University of Portland since 2001. In his capacity he prepared team and individual workouts, conducted day-to-day operations of the weight room facility and assisted the athletic training staff with injury rehabilitation and reconditioning.
Cabiles has served two stints as strength and conditioning assistant to legendary strength coach Bob Medina with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers as an intern in 1999 and in several capacities from 2001-2007. He assisted Coach Medina with individual workouts, pre-draft testing and yearly revision of the off-season strength and conditioning workout manual.
He was employed as a strength and conditioning coach with the Portland Fire of the WBNA from 2000-2003.
He earned a B.S. degree in sports injury management from UNLV in 1998 and worked at his alma mater for one year as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
Cabiles was hired to replace Todd Forcier, who was named men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach at Kentucky.
