The Orange took to the practice fields Monday afternoon for practice eleven of the 2007 training camp. Syracuse opens the regular season against Washington on Friday, August 31 (8 p.m., ESPN). Click here to buy tickets or call the Carrier Dome Box Office (1-888-DOMETIX).
Orange head coach Greg Robinson named sophomore Andrew Robinson the starting quarterback during the weekend, but that does not signal the end of the competition at the position. Including Robinson, there are five quarterbacks on the roster. Junior Cameron Dantley, who is second on the depth chart, and three freshman (Michael Coulter, Cody Catalina and David Legree) are all working hard to help each other improve for the betterment of the team.
"Cam (Dantley), I think as I mentioned the other day, worked very hard this summer," said the Orange head coach. "I think he took it as it was his opportunity to keep fighting for a job. I thought he did a good job coming into camp, ready to go, and I think he has grown a good amount since last Spring. I don’t have a concern about Cam in the ball game. The young guys, I think that they’ve taken to their coaching and I see potential in both of those two young guys. We’re looking forward to seeing a spot down the road."
"They all bring leadership ability to the position," said the sophomore signal caller Andrew Robinson. "They all bring a work ethic that I think is second to none. Obviously, to be a quarterback in the system you have to work extremely hard to prepare –extremely hard mentally and physically to be successful. They are all trying to do that and trying to do it to the highest level possible."
With a solid group behind him, Andrew Robinson believes they help him become a better player.
"Obviously, they push for some competition,” Robinson said. "But I think also we all pretty much know our stuff out there. We can go to one another and ask them ‘what did you see on this particular play, against this particular defense’ and try and formulate a solution to the problem we have out there – if we have a problem. And I just get some guidance from them on certain plays."
The Orange will suit up for two practices on Tuesday. The first practice begins at 7:45 a.m. and is followed by the second practice at 3:20 p.m.
