Head coach Greg Robinson had visitors again at practice Wednesday afternoon as referees were present to officiate a 50 play scrimmage in preparation for the season-opener against Washington Friday, August 31 (8 p.m., ESPN). "We had a scrimmage and team periods,” Robinson said. “We’re trying to get the officials as much as we can, just to feel the scrutiny of the officiating. We had them yesterday and today, so it’s good. I think the players feel the accountability to attention to detail."
Today was not the first time the men in black and white strips were guest at training camp. Robinson has infused them into practices since the team reported, including last night’s practice in the Carrier Dome.
"Last night wasn’t a scrimmage," Robinson said. "We had thud period. It’s a little more contact, but not an all out scrimmage. Today we probably scrimmaged 50 plays and we need to get some real hitting, both sides need it. I thought it was good. It was good contact on both sides of the ball. It turns things up just a notch, but we don’t need too much of it. There won’t be a whole lot more from this point on."
As bodies were flying the practice fields, Robinson was keeping an eye on how his team managed the game and the clock.
"My focus was really on execution and how we’re getting in and out of the huddles," Robinson said. "My focus was really on ‘Are we managing the game as a football team?’ not just the coaches, but the players, as well. As we continue to do this it’s helping us. Is there a mistake or two? Yes. there were two or three penalties today. There were a number more last night. We just have to keep working through those things. We’re deep into training camp now. These guys have to fight that part of it, but I think they did a good job of it today."
The Orange practice at 7:45 a.m. Thursday before heading back to the Dome at 6:30 p.m.
