ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Former Syracuse lacrosse All-Americans Roy Colsey and Michael Springer helped power the Philadelphia Barrage to its second straight Major League Lacrosse (MLL) championship on Sunday, Aug. 26 at PAETEC Park. Colsey notched two goals and Springer contributed three points (1g, 2a) as Philadelphia knocked off the Los Angeles Riptide, 16-13, in the title tilt.
Midfielder Matt Streibel scored what proved to be the game-winner with 5:42 left to go in the fourth period to lift the Barrage to victory. It was the third MLL championship for Philadelphia which also won the Steinfeld Cup in 2004 and 2006. Philadelphia is the first team in league history to repeat as champions.
Colsey was the main reason Philadelphia advanced to the championship game. He netted the game-winning goal in overtime Friday night against Denver to keep the Barrage’s title hopes alive. Colsey finished with five points against the Outlaws and was named the game’s MVP.
In addition to Colsey and Springer, the Barrage also got contributions from former Orange standouts Tim Byrnes and Joe Ceglia during its run to the championship. Byrnes played in six games during the regular season and contributed two goals. Ceglia registered an assist and 18 ground balls in 12 contests.
