Air Force veteran and Oneida firefighter Mitch Dryer will be honored at halftime and 27th Brigade Combat Team Deputy Commander Col. Gary Yaple will be present for the coin toss as Syracuse University Athletics salutes American Services during the Orange football game against Illinois on Saturday, September 15 at the Carrier Dome. Patriotic Day at the Dome celebrates the dedication and courage of the men and women in the U.S. armed services.
Dryer returned to Oneida after a one-year deployment to Iraq, where he had helped train the local Iraqi fire department in firefighting and rescue techniques, and was injured when part of a building collapsed on him while he was fighting a fire. On April 22, Dryer was buried under flaming debris while fighting a fire at the City Lanes bowling alley, before he was rescued and taken to Upstate Medical University Hospital. Dryer, who encountered fourth-degree burns and had to have his right arm amputated, will be recognized for service to his country at halftime.
Deputy Commander Col. Yaple’s presence during the coin toss will serve to acknowledge all men and women who risk their lives for the safety of the community.
Tickets for the game are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX). Fans who order tickets online can use the ‘Print at Home’ option to avoid waiting in lines at the Dome.
