DURHAM, NH – Senior Cheryl Cobbina collected her seventh double-double of the season after posting 15 kills and 17 digs in a 3-2 loss against Southern Methodist at the University of New Hampshire Tournament on Friday.
Sophomore Kacie MacTavish led the Orange offense with a team-best 17 kills as sophomore Mindy Stanislovaitis totaled a career-high 13 kills. Redshirt-junior April Quigley captured her second double-double of the season after pairing a team-high 45 assists with 13 digs.
The Syracuse (8-5) defense continues to provide support after recording 69 digs and season-high 29 total blocks. Sophomore Sarah Morton led the Orange after matching a season-best eight total blocks. Senior Joscie Kaup and sophomore Shanetha McLaurin added 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
After a 30-21 loss in game, Syracuse rebounded with a resounding 30-17 triumph in the second frame. MacTavish paced the Orange attack with a team-high four kills while Morton contributed three. Quigley sparked the Syracuse offense with 10 assists. McLaurin matched MacTavish with a team-best four digs as the Orange evened the match at one game apiece.
With its back against the wall following a 30-19 loss in game three, the resilient Orange battled back to force a decisive fifth stanza after a 30-28 win. After taking a 4-3 lead on an SMU attack error, Syracuse never looked back. Cobbina led the Orange attack with eight kills as Quigley added 15 assists. Cobbina’s six digs were a team-high.
MacTavish and Stanislovaitis each led the Orange with two kills apiece in the fifth game. Cobbina added four digs as Quigley tallied three assists. Syracuse’s season-best five-match win streak came to an end following a 15-11 loss.
Syracuse is back in action with a twin-bill on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. against host New Hampshire. After meeting the Wildcats, the Orange plays Holy Cross at 4:30 p.m. Live stats for the University of New Hampshire Tournament can be found at unhwildcats.com.
