Syracuse Sweeps Holy Cross in Day-Two Split

DURHAM, NH – Sophomore Kacie MacTavish led the Orange offense with a team-high 11 kills as Syracuse avenged a dramatic 3-2 loss against New Hampshire earlier Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Holy Cross at the New Hampshire Tournament. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis earned all-tournament accolades after totaling 29 kills and a 2.42 kills per game average in three matches.
“Mindy continues to demonstrate a competitive level of play with powerful hitting and consistency,” said 13th-year Syracuse head coach Jing Pu. “From here, we are looking to get ready for the BIG EAST competition.”
Senior Cheryl Cobbina posted 10 kills and redshirt-junior April Quigley added a team-best 28 assists as Syracuse collected its fourth three-game sweep in its last six wins.
Junior Emily Kaier tallied a season-best seven kills. Sophomores Sarah Morton and Samantha Ainsworth combined to tally 13 kills.
Freshman Hayley Todd and Morton led the Orange defense -- both tallying a team-high four total blocks. Sophomore Shanetha McLaurin led the Syracuse back-line with a career-high 17 digs.
Syracuse (9-6) took a one-game advantage with a 30-26 win after Cobbina recorded all of her 10 kills. Ainsworth sparked the Orange attack with 15 of her 16 assists. Syracuse continued with a resounding 30-11 win in the second frame. Kaier, MacTavish and Stanilovaitis each collected four kills as the Orange posted its largest margin of victory in a game this season.
In the day’s first match against New Hampshire, the Orange battled back from a two-game deficit before a marathon game-five loss, 23-21. MacTavish tallied her seventh double-double of the season after pairing a team-high 19 kills with 13 digs. Junior Brittany Kern collected a career-best 14 kills as Quigley posted her third double-double of the season, and second in as many games, with 43 assists and 10 digs.
The Orange rebounded to win games three and four, 30-25 and 30-28, respectively. The Syracuse defense boasted four players in double-figure digs, led by senior Joscie Kaup’s club-leading 15. Morton’s season-best 10 total blocks led an Orange front-line that collected 25 total blocks. Morton paired 11 kills with her total block output to post her first double-double of the season.
Syracuse returns to Manley Field House for the opening of the BIG EAST schedule on Friday, September 21 against Rutgers at 7:00 p.m.
