The 2007 fall season is in full-swing as six Syracuse teams were action during week five. The men’s and women’s cross country teams topped some of the nation’s best en route to posting impressive first-place finishes at the Boston College Invitational. Syracuse field hockey continues its early-season success after a 2-0 week, including 2-1 win against Rutgers in The BIG EAST Conference opener. The Orange men’s soccer team has extended its unbeaten streak to seven games after playing to a 1-1 draw at Albany and besting in-state rival Fordham 3-0 in the season’s home-opener. The women’s volleyball team captured its season-high fifth straight win before finishing the week 2-2 at the University of New Hampshire Tournament. The SU women’s soccer team played to two scoreless draws against East Carolina and at No. 8 Boston College.
The Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country teams each posted first-place finishes at the Boston College Invitational. The Orange men topped No. 3 Iona and No. 11 Providence, two of the Northeast Region’s early-season favorites. The SU women collected the top spot in front of No. 9 Providence and No. 28 Boston College. Senior Kyle Heath’s third-place finish led four Syracuse men scores in the top 10. Junior Nana Sang-Bender’s second-place finish paced the Orange women.

The Orange field hockey team improved its overall record to 7-1, the program’s best start since the 1990 campaign. Syracuse opened The BIG EAST schedule with a 2-1 win against Rutgers. Freshman Christina Puggi tallied five saves and senior forward Gloria Nantulya scored twice to lead the Orange. SU collected its second win in as many outings after a 2-1 victory against Hofstra. Freshman Lelia Sacre scored the first Orange tally before Nantulya added the match’s eventual game-winner. Puggi added three stops in the win.

The SU men’s soccer team has extended its unbeaten streak to six games, the longest such streak under 16th-year Orange head coach Dean Foti. Sophomore Hansen Woodruff’s team-best third goal of the season aided Syracuse to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Albany. Goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia’s collected four saves. The Orange opened the 2007 home schedule with a resounding 3-0 blanking against Fordham. Junior forward Kyle Hall matched a career-best with two goals and Woodruff added a third. In capturing his 11th career shutout, Cavicchia’s six stops moved him into a tie for seventh on the SU all-time career saves list (174).

The Orange volleyball team extended its season-best win streak to five matches and improved its record to 4-0 against teams in the state of New York after a three-game sweep at Binghamton. Senior Cheryl Cobbina led the SU attack with a team-best 18 kills as the Orange ended the Wildcats’ 14-match home win streak that dated back to the 2005 season. Syracuse ended the week with a 1-2 finish at the University of New Hampshire Tournament. Freshman Mindy Stanislovaitis received all-tournament laurels after the Orange three-game sweep against Holy Cross.

Complete 2007 Volleyball Schedule
The women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against East Carolina and eighth-ranked Boston College this past weekend. The Orange now stand at 2-2-2. With the shutouts sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan now has nine for her career, which is third best all-time at SU. She made five saves against East Carolina and made a career-high tying 10 stops against Boston College.
