JAMAICA, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made three saves as the women's soccer team (3-3-1, 0-1-0 BE) was defeated, 1-0, at St. John's (6-0-1, 1-0-0 BE), to begin BIG EAST play. SU has allowed one goal or fewer in six of its first eight games.
The Orange defense only allowed one shot on goal in the first half, a try by St. John's sophomore Kelly McConnell during the ninth minute and Bennett-Hattan was up to the challenge. The Red Storm went 46 minutes until its next try and once again Bennett-Hattan made the save. She maintains her spot atop the Orange's all-time career goals-against average list with a 0.94 mark.
The 0-0 tie was interrupted at 59:38 when St. John's senior Krystle Jalalian gathered a rebound and went low for her fourth goal of the season.
Senior midfielder Jen Taormina, SU's leading scorer, tried to answer less than a minute later, but her shot was blocked. St. John's played the possession game the rest of the way to produce the final result. The Red Storm had the advantage with eight corners compared to the Orange's three.
Next up, the Orange travels to Colgate for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept 23.
