Three Orange football student-athletes earned BIG EAST weekly honors after the 38-35 upset at Louisville. Sophomore quarterback Andrew Robinson was named the conference offensive player of the week and freshman Max Suter was named special teams' player of the week. Senior defensive end Jameel McClain was named to the honor roll.
Robinson had the best game of his career by completing 17-of-26 passes for 423 yards and tying a school record with four touchdowns. Only seven other quarterbacks in Syracuse history have thrown for four touchdowns in a game. Robinson was two yards shy of the school's single-game record of 425 yards set by Marvin Graves against Rutgers in 1992. On the first play of the game, Robinson hit a wide open Taj Smith for 79-yards touchdown. He continued to roll, connecting with Da'Mon Merkerson on a 43-yard touchdown toss in the second quarter and with Smith on a 60-yard touchdown pass in the third. In the fourth quarter, he found Mike Williams on a 17-yard slant for the game-winning touchdown.
Suter showed kick return brilliance when he broke for a 93-yard kick return in the second quarter to put the Orange ahead 14-7. The return for a touchdown was the first for SU since Kevin Johnson's 100-yard return against Miami (Fla.) in 1998. Suter ranks second in the BIG EAST and is 27th nationally, including third among all freshmen in the Bowl Championship Subdivision, with 27.2 yards per kick return average.
McClain increased his career sack total to 12, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass at Louisville. His third quarter interception was returned for 38 yards and set up a 26-yard Patrick Shadle field goal. He finished the game with seven tackles, including two for a loss. An All-America, Nagurski Award (Best Defensive Player) and Ted Hendricks Award (Best Defensive End) candidate, McClain is tied for 13th in the BIG EAST with 7.0 tackles per contest average.
The Orange travels to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Sept. 29 for a 3 p.m. contest before returning to the Dome to host nationally ranked West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 6. Click here to purchase tickets.
