Unblemished Orange Earns BIG EAST Accolades

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse field hockey squad once again had two players named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Graduate student Leigh Fawcett and freshman midfielder Maggie Befort received the honor for their performances against Maine and Dartmouth last week. This is the second consecutive accolade for Fawcett as she, along with senior forward Gloria Nantulya, were awarded BIG EAST honors last week.
Fawcett propelled the Orange to a 4-3 overtime victory against Maine on Saturday, September 1. The back scored twice and SU overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Black Bears. Trailing 3-2 with just 13 minutes remaining Fawcett took over and scored Syracuse’s last two goals of the afternoon. The Scotland native converted a broken play off an Orange corner at the 61 minute mark to tie the score at 3-3. She then drove home the golden goal off a penalty corner at 81:05 to give Syracuse the 4-3 victory.
Fawcett is first in the BIG EAST in shots (24), tied for seventh in goals (2) and tied for eighth in points (5). She is first on the team in shots and third in both goals and points.
Befort recorded a team-best five points on two goals and one assist last weekend in Syracuse’s victories against Maine and at Dartmouth. The freshman’s assist came on SU’s first goal of the weekend against Maine. She completed the three-point performance against the Black Bears by converting a penalty stroke. Befort would convert on another penalty stroke a day later in the Orange’s 2-1 at Dartmouth. The midfielder made two of the three shots, all on goal, she took during the weekend.
Befort is tied for second in the conference in goals (4) and is third in points (9). The freshman is first on the team in both of those categories.
First year head coach Ange Bradley has led Syracuse to four consecutive wins to start the 2007 season. The Orange has cored 13 goals in its four wins. SU last started a season 4-0 in 1997, when they finished 13-8. That year Syracuse won a program-best six games to start that season, outscoring its opponents 15-0. The Orange has now won six consecutive games, dating back to last season.
The Orange is the only team in the BIG EAST with four victories.
Fawcett and Befort and the rest of the Orange return to action next weekend with a pair of games at home this weekend. SU hosts Central Michigan on Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m. and Temple on Sunday, September 9 at 1 p.m.
