SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse volleyball team resumes play today in a Labor Day Matinee against Albany at 3:00 p.m. in Manley Field House. The meeting with the Great Danes marks the second opportunity for Orange fans to catch the Syracuse volleyball team live via Orange All-Access. Joel Goddett will be calling the action and Ben Altsher will be providing the color commentary.

What’s Next
Following the meeting with the Great Danes, SU will host Fordham, Princeton and Texas Tech for the annual Big Orange Tournament on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8. Fordham and Texas Tech get the tournament started at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before Syracuse meets Princeton at 7:00 p.m.
Scouting the Great Danes (2-3)
Syracuse vs. Albany (9/3, 3:00 p.m.)
Albany is coming off a 3-1 loss at BIG EAST foe West Virginia. Against the Mountaineers, senior Ashley Crenshaw led the way for the Great Danes with 17 kills and sophomore Valerie Sourbeer added 12. Freshman Brooke Stanley collected a team-best 29 assists and sophomore Samantha Jacobson posted 18. The Albany defense was led by sophomore Kate Eckhardt’s team-high 16 digs.
Through four matches, Crenshaw leads all Great Danes with 66 kills, a 4.93 kills per game average and .466 attack percentage. Stanley has paced the Albany attack with a team-high 95 assists and Eckhardt has collected a team-best 45 digs and a 3.21 digs per game average.
All-time, Syracuse holds a 5-3 series advantage with its last win, a 3-2 decision, coming in 2003. The last time the teams met was in 2006 and Albany won the match, 3-1.
Scouting the Tigers (0-0)
Big Orange Tournament, Syracuse vs. Princeton (9/7, 7:00 p.m.)
The Big Orange Tournament will be the Princeton women’s
volleyball team’s first taste of action in 2007. The Tigers return 14
letterwinners to a squad that finished 21-3 in 2006. Two seniors - Jenny McReynolds and Emily Turner - lead the veteran charge for Princeton.
All-time, Syracuse holds a 4-2 series advantage over Princeton. The teams met twice in 1999 at the Asics/Blue Hen Classic in Newark, Del., splitting both decisions. The Tigers captured the first match in five games before the Orange were victorious in round two in
four games.
Scouting the Rams (5-4)
Big Orange Tournament, Syracuse vs. Fordham (9/8, 12:30 p.m.)
Fordham comes into the two-day Big Orange Tournament with a 5-4 overall record. After splitting their first six decisions, the Rams have won two of their last three matches.
In it’s last outing, Fordham posted a 3-1 win against Niagara. The freshmen duo of Christi Griffiths and Jenna Hart collected 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior Katherine Burrell paced the Rams’ offense with a team-high 39 assists. Defensively, senior Stephanie Frost and Sara Friede each tallied 11 digs.
Thus far in 2007, Griffiths has led the Rams’ attack with a team-high 120 kills while sophomore Emilie Stewart has tallied 81. Frost has paced the Fordham defense with a team-high 110 digs. Burrell leads all Rams with 398 assists while also contributing 107 digs.
All-time, Syracuse holds a 5-1 series advantage over Fordham with the teams’ first meeting dating back to 1979. The Orange’s last win, a 3-2 decision, came in 2005. Fordham captured the last match in 2005, 3-0.
Scouting the Red Raiders (4-2)
Big Orange Tournament, Syracuse vs. Texas Tech (9/8, 7:00 p.m.)
The Red Raiders come into the Big Orange Tournament with a 4-2 record thus far in 2006. After a loss in their season-opener to Virginia, Texas Tech has responded to win four of the next five decisions.
In a 3-2 win against Lamar, junior Michelle Flores led the Texas Tech attack with a team-high 15 kills. Seniors Amy Gandy and Alicia Ostmeyer each added 14. Senior Emily Ziegler paced the Red Raider offense with a team-best 54 assists while sophomore Jenn Harrell collected 17 digs.
Saturday marks the first meeting all-time between Syracuse and Texas Tech.
What’s Ahead
After the Big Orange Tournament, the Syracuse volleyball team heads South on I-81 for a match-up with in-state rival Binghamton on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.
