SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange men’s lacrosse coach John Desko has announced that former Onondaga Community College (OCC) defender Sid Smith (Ohsweken, Ontario) has committed to Syracuse to play lacrosse. Smith guided OCC to an 18-0 overall record in 2006 which included a dominant 30-6 victory against Suffolk Community College to win the 2006 NJCAA national championship.
“We are very excited to have Sid Smith on campus,” Desko said. “I got to watch him play at the world games and at OCC and I think he will be able to help us right away.”
One of the team’s captains, Smith anchored a defense that surrendered just 4.4 goals per game and held its opponents to fewer than five goals nine times in 2006. The Lazers also captured the Region III and Mid-State Conference titles on its way to the national championship, and Smith was named to the NJCAA All-America First Team. He did not compete for OCC in 2007 to concentrate on academics.
While he didn’t play for OCC, Smith honed his craft on the international lacrosse scene. He was a member of the Iroquois team that reached the title game of the 2006 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Indoor Championship. He also played for the Iroquois at the world outdoor games where the Nationals went head-to-head with Desko’s U.S. squad.
In addition, Smith captained the Six Nations Arrows Express at the Minto Cup, which is awarded to the best junior men’s lacrosse team in Canada each year. He helped guide the team to the 2007 championship and the 2006 squad reached the Minto Cup title game. Smith won the Jim Bishop Memorial Award as the tournament’s most sportsmanlike player in 2006.
While playing for the Arrows in the Ontario Junior “A” league, Smith was awarded the John 'Gus' McCauley Memorial Trophy as the 2007 Defender of the Year. He was also tabbed a first-team league all-star. Smith tallied eight assists for the Arrows and helped the squad to a 17-0-1 regular-season record, as well as a 4-2 victory against Orangeville in the best-of-seven championship series.
In 2006, he won the Dean McLeod Award as the league’s playoff MVP.
