TAMPA, Fla. – The rv/rv Orange women's basketball team (13-2, 1-1) plays its second consecutive BIG EAST road contest when it travels Cigar City to battle the University of South Florida Bulls (10-5, 0-2) at the Sun Dome on Saturday, January 12 at 7 p.m.
The Orange faithful can listen live on WTLA 1200/1440 AM or through suathletics.com via Orange All Access. The voice of the SU women's hoops team and 2004 Syracuse graduate, Brian Higgins, will provide the action. Live stats of the contest are available on gousfbulls.com.
The Orange, which is receiving votes in both the Associated Press Poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, has an RPI of No. 13 in the NCAA rankings. Syracuse has won 12 of its last 13 games and its record is its best since starting 13-2 during the 1980-81 season.
Syracuse is coming off an 85-75 setback at the hands of rv/rv Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The squad's only other loss came at North Carolina (97-72) on Nov. 18. The Orange rebounded after that game by defeating Lehigh, 61-54, on Nov. 25.
Saturday's contest marks the first time this season the Orange will play back-to-back road games. Away from the friendly confines of the Dome or Manley Field House, Syracuse is 5-2 and has outscored its opponents 75.0 ppg to 67.3 ppg.
Junior guard Chandrea Jones is averaging a team-best 15.7 ppg during those contests, while senior forward Fantasia Goodwin is averaging 15.6 ppg. Both sophomore forward Nicole Michael and freshman guard Erica Morrow are averaging more than 10 ppg. Michael has registered 11.9 ppg and Morrow has posted 11.3 ppg.
The Orange and the Bulls have met four times entering Saturday's game and the series is tied 2-2. The first two meetings came during the 1989-90 season as part of in-season tournaments and SU triumphed in both contests. SU knocked off the Bulls, 74-55, in the Carrier Classic and 76-70 at the USF Holiday Classic. In 2006, South Florida was victorious, 73-55, in the first BIG EAST meeting between the two schools. USF also defeated SU, 78-61, last season in the Carrier Dome.
USF is on a three-game skid, including two BIG EAST losses. The Bulls lost to St. John's, 63-51, in its last outing. Junior guard Shantia Grace, who led the team with 16 points, is averaging a team-best 18.1 ppg and is second in assists with 3.7 per contest. She has scored in double figures in all 14 games she has played this season.
