HONOLULU, HI. – Senior free safety Joe Fields ended his collegiate career with one last victory as his team, the Aina (East), defeated the Kai (West), 38-7, in the 2008 Hula Bowl in Honolulu on Saturday, Jan. 12. Field was a member of a defense which only surrendered 240 yards, including just 35 yards rushing, and forced six turnovers that led to 28 points. The Aina defense kept the Kai offense off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter.
Fields finishes his time as an Orange gridironer after being named to the 2007 All-BIG EAST Second Team. The Houston, Texas native finished tied for sixth in the conference with 8.1 tackles per game. He had 97 tackles, including 53 solo, four interceptions and a fumble recovery. The one time Orange quarterback started 25 consecutive games in the Syracuse secondary.
Fields was one of 11 BIG EAST student-athletes invited to play in the game and was coached by Illinois' Ron Zook and Boston College's Jeff Jagodzinski. The Hula Bowl is considered an all-star game and is exclusively for seniors.
