RazorSharks To Retire Sims' Jersey

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester RazorSharks will honor one of its most important and respected players from their first two years by retiring Lazarus Sims’ #3 jersey on Thursday, January 24, 2008. The RazorSharks host the Quad Cities River Hawks at the Blue Cross Arena that evening at 7:05 p.m.

Sims was a key member of Syracuse's 1995-96 club that reached the NCAA Championship game. A four-year letter winner with the Orange, Sims had a solid senior campaign, averaging 6.3 points and 3.7 assists per game while helping SU post a 29-9 overall record. He currently serves as coordinator of player development for the men's basketball team at his alma mater.

“Over my last five years I have not had a second of success where Laz was not involved," said coach Rod Baker. "I am a better coach because I have had the chance to coach Lazarus Sims.”

“Laz literally was the coach on the floor," noted RazorSharks guard Keith Friel. "He was the epitome of a leader. We all looked up to him on and off the court.”

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Sims attended Henninger High School. His professionall basketball career included stints in the ABA, CBA, IBL, USBL and with the Harlem Globetrotters. He also played with pro squads in Poland and Venezuela.

On “Laz Night” at the Blue Cross Arena, the first 500 fans will receive a Commemorative Lazarus Sims card. General Admission tickets will be $3.00 off at the box office.
