The Orange, under the leadership of second-year head coach and former professional player Luke Jensen, welcomes the Bearcats to the “Salt City” following an 11-9 overall mark and a fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Tournament in 2007. Syracuse finished the season having collected nine wins in its final 12 matches.
Against the Bearcats, Syracuse will unveil five first-year Orange players. Junior and 2007 BIG EAST All-Tournament team honoree Maria Vasilyeva joins sophomore Chelsea Jones in ushering in a new era in SU Tennis.
Sophomore Ashley Spicer begins her second year at the collegiate tennis level against Cincinnati following one season at Washington State. Freshmen Katlyn Haycock, Simone Kalhorn, Christina Tan and Jacquelynn Tang will make their collegiate debuts on Friday.
In 2008, Jensen will be joined on the sideline by assistant coach Shelley George, beginning her second season with the Orange. Volunteer assistant coach Chuck Wiggins make his SU coaching debut on Friday.
As Jensen completes his responsibilities with ESPN at the Australian Open, George will be at the head of the SU bench on Friday against the Bearcats and on Sunday against Georgetown.
Cincinnati (2-0, 0-0)
The Bearcats arrive in Syracuse with two victories to their credit thus far in the 2008 season. Cincinnati opened the campaign with a 4-3 win against cross-city rival Dayton following a doubles competition sweep. UC collected its second victory in as many tries with a convincing
6-1 triumph against Morehead State.
Senior Jennifer Keiner, senior Alizee Paradis and junior Elizabeth Young have tallied perfect 2-0 singles marks thus far in 2008. The doubles tandems of Young/Keiner and Paradis/junior Jenny Rowen are 2-0 in doubles play.
Head coach Kimberly Jones is in her fourth season with the Bearcats. Assistant coach Julie Klauck, a 2005 UC graduate, begins her rookie campaign on the Cincinnati sideline.
Last Time Against the Bearcats
The Orange will be looking for its third victory against the Bearcats in as many seasons on Friday. Syracuse posted a convincing 6-1 triumph last season behind the play of senior Ashley Lipton. Lipton’s two wins in singles and doubles action moved her into seventh place all-time on the SU victories list.
Junior Olga Votavova, sophomore Maria Vasilyeva and junior Catherine Zawadzki tallied singles victories. Freshman Chelsea Jones’ singles win was the first of her SU career.
