SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No.24/24 Orange women's basketball team returns to the Dome to host St. John's in a clash of two BIG EAST opponents on Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 2 p.m. tip. "St. John's is a very good perimeter team with good guards and they have a very athletic post player," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "They played Pittsburgh to a six-point game recently – they were done 20 and cut it to within three or four points. It's going to be a tough game in the Dome."
Fans can experience the game in person, by listening on the radio or by watching on television. Tickets for the outing may be purchased on-line (click here), over the phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office during normal business hours. Once again, fans will be able to receive their tickets immediately after their purchase, using the “Print At Home” delivery method. For additional information, fans can contact the Carrier Dome Box Office toll free (888-366-3849) or (315-443-2121).
Live video of the contest can be seen on suathletics.com via Orange All Access, which will also have the WTLA 1200/1440 AM broadcast. 2004 Syracuse graduate Brian Higgins will have the call.
The contest will be televised on BIG EAST Television, Time Warner locally, with Beth Mowins and Brook Weisbrod on the call.
This is the 49th matchup between the two schools since the first game on Feb. 16, 1980. SU was victorious in that game (62-60) as well as in last year's outing (61-59). Forward Fantasia Goodwin led the Orange with a then career-high 24 points, connecting on 9-of-14 shots and 4-of-5 from behind the arc.
Saturday's game will be the first for the Orange as a nationally ranked team. SU broke into the top-25 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Polls is past week.
"We talked about it at the beginning of the year that one of our goals was to be nationally ranked and it's here," Hillsman said. "We have to guard against, so we have to go out and play hard every night and continue to win basketball games."
The Orange, which is guaranteed to finish about .500 for the first time since the 2001-02 season, is 8-1 at home this season and is outscoring its opponents by more than 20 points (74.0-53.4) in the Salt City. Syracuse is also outrebounding its opponents at home by 12.5 rebounds per game (12.5) and is undefeated when grabbing more boards than its opponents.
Syracuse has four student-athletes averaging double-digits at home with junior guard Chandrea Jones leading the way with 16.8 points per game. Goodwin is averaging 13.0 points and sophomore guard Nicole Michael has posted 12.9 points per game. Freshman guard Erica Morrow is fourth with 11.4 points per outing.
The Red Storm is in search of its second BIG EAST win after losing three straight. Unfortunately for St. John's, Syracuse is the fourth consecutive ranked opponent it will face. Junior guard Monique McLean and senior guard Kia Wright are averaging in double-figures with 14.1 and 11.2 points per game, respectively.
