All in the USA Basketball Family: Greene, Flynn, Boeheim and Wainwright Take The Court Wednesday When Orange Faces DePaul

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - There will be a mini-USA Basketball reunion when Syracuse (14-7, 4-4) plays at DePaul (9-10, 4-3) on Wednesday, Jan. 30. SU freshmen Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Donte’ Greene (Baltimore, Md.) will be back on the court with DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright. The trio was part of the USA Basketball Under-19 team that earned a silver medal at the 2007 FIBA World Championship. Wainwright was the club’s head coach. Orange mentor Jim Boeheim is currently an assistant on the men's national team's coaching staff.
Wednesday’s game tips off at 8:30 p.m. at Allstate Arena. Voice of the Orange Matt Park and former men's hoops standout Gene Waldron will have the call on the Syracuse ISP Network’s flagship (TK-99.5 FM) with the pre-game show beginning an hour before tipoff. The radio network broadcast is available live on Orange All-Access. In addition, the game will be televised live on ESPN Regional.
The Orange halted a two-game losing streak by outlasting Providence, 71-64, Sunday at the Carrier Dome. The win evened SU’s league record at 4-4.
Greene was the catalyst against the Friars, finishing with 24 points. He tied his career highs with five three’s, including one that snapped a 56-56 tie with two and half minutes to go.
Greene’s re-emergence as a big-time scorer was just one key to SU’s win. For the second straight game, the Orange crushed its opponent on the boards and put forth an inspired defensive effort. It outrebounded Providence 47-32 nearly a week after it showed similar dominance cleaning the glass at Georgetown. Against the Friars, three SU players pulled down at least eight rebounds. Center Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.) secured a game-high 14 boards. Kristof Ongenaet (Ghent, Belgium) had eight in his first start as did reserve center Rick Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.).
The Orange held the Friars to 37.1 percent shooting from the field, including a 9-31 performance (29.0 pct.) in the first half.
Onuaku’s performance pushed his numbers in BIG EAST play closer to a double-double. He is averaging 12.0 points and 9.8 rebounds against league foes heading into Wednesday’s contest.
A win on the road would thrust SU back into middle of the pack in the BIG EAST. To do it, it will have to beat a DePaul team that is 3-1 in the conference at home.
Senior guard Draelon Burns is averaging a squad-best 18.0 points per game. Freshman guard Dar Tucker has been valuable off the bench (13.3 ppg.) and 6-10 freshman center Mac Koshwal (11.5 ppg., 8.1 rpg.) has emerged in his rookie campaign. Koshwal had 19 points and 12 boards in DePaul’s loss at Marquette Sunday. Senior forward Karron Clarke (9.6 ppg.) is the club’s fourth-leading scorer.
The overall series with DePaul is tied at four wins each and 1-1 in BIG EAST Conference contests.
