The Orange (16-3, 4-2 BE) made its move up two spots in the AP Poll thanks to the 28-point victory against the Red Storm. The Orange only trailed for the first 3:25 before exploding for a 28-16 lead at the break. A pull-up three-pointer during the closing seconds of the game by freshman guard Tasha Harris gave the Orange its 80th point – the fourth time this season SU has reached the mark.
Michael earned her BIG EAST recognition by leading the team in points for the fourth time this season and scoring in double-digits for the sixth consecutive game and 15th time this season. The Orange is undefeated when she leads the team in points.
This season the sophomore forward from Queens, N.Y. is averaging 13.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, tying her for second on the team in both categories. She has posted six double-doubles so far and has grabbed 10 or more rebounds in seven games – all Syracuse victories.
Junior Syracuse sensation Chandrea Jones was named to the conference honor roll on Monday, Jan. 21 thanks to her 25 points against top-ranked Connecticut on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and her 16-point performance at Villanova on Saturday, Jan. 19. In both outings she secured double-doubles by grabbing 10 boards against the Huskies and 11 rebounds at the Wildcats. She leads the team with 16.9 points per game.
Both Michael and Jones are helping the Orange accomplish feats that have never been touched by the school before. SU has never been 16-3 nor has it ever won 12 straight games (Nov. 25 – Jan. 5). Also, for the first time in the program's 37-year history, the team is ranked in the nation's top-25.
DePaul, however, is also riding the momentum of a No. 23 ranking in the latest AP Poll and a No. 25 ranking in last week's coaches' poll. The Blue Demons carry a 15-4 record, including a 4-2 conference mark. They are led by senior guard Allie Quigley's 18.2 points per game. In DePaul's last outing, an 81-51 win against Cincinnati on Jan. 26, she totaled 14 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and six steals in 25 minutes.
