Honolulu, HI – Football season isn't over for every member of the 2007 Orange gridiron gang. Senior free safety Joe Fields will participate in the 2008 Hula Bowl in Honolulu on Saturday, Jan. 12. The contest will be played at 6 p.m. EST from Aloha Stadium, home of the Pro Bowl, and can be watched on Versus.
Fields is one of 11 BIG EAST players invited to suit up for the Aina (East) team and will by coached by Illinois' Ron Zook and Boston College's Jeff Jagodzinski. The Hula Bowl is exclusively for seniors and gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent in front of NFL scouts and a nationally televised audience.
The week leading up to the game is filled with competitive practices constantly evaluated by NFL general managers, scouts and personnel directors. In 2007, 26 members of the participants were drafted into the NFL.
There are more than 3,300 student-athletes who have experienced the Hula Bowl since it began in 1946, including 36 Orange football standouts. The group includes players from more than 150 colleges and universities.
A 2007 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Fields finished the season tied for sixth in the BIG EAST with 8.1 tackles per game. He had 97 tackles, including 53 solo stops, and four interceptions and one fumble recovery. Fields started 25 consecutive games in the secondary after moving to free safety from quarterback prior to the 2006 season.
