SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Kacie MacTavish recorded 17 kills and 15 digs in Syracuse’s 3-1 win against the South Florida Bulls Sunday afternoon. The Orange won the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-23, lost the third set, 19-25, and secured the win with a 25-19 fourth set victory. The Syracuse University volleyball team is now 11-9 overall, and 4-1 in BIG EAST conference play.
Junior Sarah Morton and senior Brittany Kern joined MacTavish on the offense tallying 10 and eight kills, respectively. Senior April Quigley handled the setting duties for the Orange registering 39 assists in the win.
On defense, senior Marissa Kanemura, junior Shanetha McLaurin and freshman Noemie Lefebvre all posted double-digit digs. Kanemura had 11, while McLaurin and Lefebvre each contributed 10. Morton and Quigley led the team in blocking after registering nine total blocks apiece.
The Orange took a 6-0 lead to start off the first set and the Bulls were never able to recover. Syracuse maintained at least a four-point lead through the entire set. Six-straight attack errors by the Bulls would let the Orange reach 24 points and Quigley would close out the set with a kill, 25-12.
The second set started out much different than the first as neither team could establish a lead. The score was tied 15 different times throughout the set. Kills from Kern and sophomore Hayley Todd would give the Orange a 2-0 advantage going into the third set.
The third set went the Bulls way from the start. South Florida would go up 4-0 before the Orange was able to get on the board. Despite an Orange comeback where it held South Florida at 15 for six-straight points to take a 16-15 lead, it wasn’t enough to derail the Bulls. South Florida would go on to win the set, 25-19, to force a fourth set.
Syracuse set the tone from the start of the fourth set taking a 4-1 lead. The closest the Bulls would come in their effort to overtake the Orange was when they came within two points at 12-10. Syracuse never slowed down, however, and MacTavish would tally the final kill to win the fourth set, 25-19.
The Orange is back in action on Tuesday night against Niagara in Manley Field House. Action begins at 7 p.m. It will be Syracuse’s last match played in Manley this season, with all following home games played in the Women’s Building.
