It was another busy weekend in Syracuse athletics with seven teams in action. The women’s field hockey team went 1-1 on the weekend, posting a 7-0 victory on Sunday against Holy Cross. The men’s soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against conference foe DePaul on Saturday night. Volleyball finished the week 2-0 with a win at home against Niagara on Tuesday and its eighth-straight road win against Marquette on Saturday afternoon. Women’s soccer hosted its last two home games of the season, posting a 2-1 double overtime win against Seton Hall. The women’s ice hockey team earned its first program win at Quinnipiac with a 2-0 shutout. Cross Country tested out the course for the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Indiana University this weekend. The men finished 15th of 49 and the women finished 11th of 39. Swimming and Diving competed in the Black Knight Invitational at West Point. While no team scores were kept, the women earned 14 event wins and the men earned 13.
Field Hockey
The No. 1 Orange field hockey team went 1-1 this weekend after facing No. 9 Connecticut and Holy Cross. Syracuse suffered its first loss of the year against UConn in what turned out to be a heated defensive battle between the two rivals. Despite outshooting the Huskies, 14-6, the Huskies managed to score the only goal of the game. Six cards were issued in the game, three of which were yellow. On Sunday, field hockey earned a 7-0 victory against Holy Cross. It’s the team’s seventh shutout of the season. Senior Shannon Taylor tied her own school record after tallying four goals. She has moved into first place on all-time single-season points list with 56. Sophomore Kahli Vojkovic scored her first goal of the season in the victory. The team is now 15-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Men’s Soccer
Men’s soccer faced conference opponent DePaul on Saturday night at the SU Soccer Stadium in what turned out to be a 1-0 victory for Syracuse. Junior Tom Perevegyencev scored the goal for the Orange in the 86th minute of the game. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Perevegyencev scored the goal after a header by Spencer Schomaker ricocheted off the post and into Perevegyencev’s possession. He slipped a low shot past the DePaul keeper for the win. The men’s soccer team improves to 6-4-3 overall and 3-4-1 in BIG EAST play.

Volleyball
The Orange volleyball team (13-9, 5-1 BE) stepped out of conference play last Tuesday night for a matchup with Niagara. In the last match of the season played in Manley Field House, Syracuse swept the Purple Eagles 3-0. Leading the Orange were juniors Sarah Morton and Kacie MacTavish who each recorded 11 kills. Senior April Quigley and freshman Hallie Morse shared the setting duties registering 21 and 11 assists, respectively. From there, the Orange headed to conference foe Marquette on Saturday and posted a five-set victory against the Golden Eagles. Syracuse won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-21, and the fifth set15-12. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre led the Orange with 15 kills. Morton contributed 10 kills and MacTavish posted 13 to join Lefebvre in double-digit kills.

Cross Country
The men’s and women’s cross country team were able to test out the course of the NCAA Cross Country Championship hosted by Indiana University on Saturday. The women finished 11th out of 39 teams, while the men finished 15th out of 49. Leading the women was senior Nana Sang-Bender who finished 44th of 281 runners in the 6k with a time of 21:16. Junior Brad Miller was the top runner for the Orange men. He finished 17th out of 276 with a time of 24:02 in the 8k trial.

Despite a 4-2 loss on Friday night, the Orange rallied to record its first program win, a 2-0 shutout. Sophomore captains Julie Rising and Stefanie Marty recorded the two goals for the Orange, while goalie Lucy Schoedel posted her first shutout as a member of the Orange. Head coach Paul Flanagan earned his 231st victory in the collegiate ranks with the win. Scoring the two Orange goals in Friday night’s game were Marty and sophomore Cheyenne Bojeski.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving team traveled to West Point, N.Y. this weekend to compete in the Black Knight Invitational. The women earned 14 wins and the men earned 13. Junior Boldiszar Kiss won four individual events, including the 100 fly, the 200 fly twice and the 200 IM. Sophomore Natalie Mazzetta led the Orange women with four first-place finishes. She won the 400 IM, 500 free, 200 fly and the 1,000 free. A men’s team composed of Kiss, sophomores Kuba Kotynia and Berk Kahraman and junior Alex Taraskin won both the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Medley Relay. Four different women’s teams earned victories in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays and the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays.
