SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was all Orange today, as No. 3 Syracuse outplayed the Villanova Wildcats in a 5-0 shutout at J.S. Coyne Stadium. It marked the eighth shutout of the year for the now 16-1 Orange, who also picked up its fourth conference victory this season and remain atop the standings in the highly competitive BIG EAST. Syracuse controlled the entire game, establishing the tempo on offense, and denying every ball on defense.
“I’m really proud of the way these kids competed today, from beginning to end,” coach Ange Bradley said. “We played a great game, one of the best I’ve seen in a while.”
Senior midfielder and captain Shannon Taylor led the way for Syracuse, netting three goals to increase her total on the year to 25. With a game-high seven points, Taylor added onto her single-season record, which now stands at 63.
Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad contributed to the effort, tallying two goals, one of which came off a Villanova turnover in its own territory. She now has 15 on the season.
The entire day, Syracuse defenders pestered the Wildcats, causing numerous turnovers and penalty corners. The Orange, who lead the nation in corners, registered an impressive 21 today, compared to Villanova’s two. Senior goalie Heather Hess never let the Wildcats come close to putting one on the board, saving the three shots that came her way with ease.
Syracuse continues to build upon its success, making this the best season the SU field hockey program has had in its 37 year history. Its 16-1 record and .941 winning percentage is the highest amongst any team in the NCAA.
The Orange rounds out the home schedule with a game this Sunday versus the 14th ranked Eagles of Boston College, noon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Syracuse will honor its four seniors (Taylor, Brittany Shannon, Heather Doran and Heather Hess) prior to the contest. Fans can watch the game live via Orange All Access. Live statistics will also be available on SUAthletics.com.
