SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Noemie Lefebvre posted a match-high 17 kills in Syracuse’s last home match for three weeks against the Louisville Cardinals (10-10, 6-3). After losing the first set, 25-22, the Orange rallied for a second set victory, 25-16. However, the Cardinals managed to control the third and fourth sets (25-11, 25-18) for the 3-1 win.
“We had a few ups and downs, which you can’t have against tough teams,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “It was a rough weekend, but Cincinnati and Louisville combine for a tough travel party. We have a good lineup for the rest of the season, so hopefully we can pull off enough wins to get into the tournament.”
Juniors Sarah Morton and Kacie MacTavish added 10 and 9 kills, respectively, for the Orange, while senior setter April Quigley set the pace for the offensive attack registering 39 assists for the day. Sophomore Hayley Todd also contributed seven kills to add to Syracuse’s total.
Four Orange women tallied double-digit digs against the Cardinals. Senior Marissa Kanemura, junior Shanetha McLaurin and MacTavish each recorded 11. Lefebvre had her sixth double-double of the season with 10 digs. Morton led the Orange in blocking with five total. Todd contributed three block assists in the match.
The Orange controlled the first set taking a 21-17 towards the end. However, a Cardinal timeout a few plays earlier slowed the Syracuse attack enough for the Cardinals to tally eight-straight points. A kill by Lefebvre cut off the Louisville scoring run, but another Louisville timeout gave the Cardinals the break they needed to close the set, 25-22.
Syracuse again took an early lead in the second set, taking a 15-7 lead by midway through the frame. Louisville’s use of both timeouts would be to no avail as the Orange continued to rack up the points. A MacTavish kill closed the second set in favor of the Orange, 25-16.
Despite the second set win for the Orange, the Cardinals would grab the third and fourth sets for to take the match win. The third set was all Louisville as the Cardinals went on several different scoring runs. The Orange battled back in the fourth set, challenging the Cardinals throughout. However, Louisville had enough momentum to hold off Syracuse for the win.
Syracuse heads on the road for its next four matches aiming to extend its nine-game road winning streak. The Orange travels to Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 1 for a 10 a.m. matchup and then heads to DePaul for a Sunday matinee with the Blue Demons. SU’s next home match is Friday, Nov. 14 against Pittsburgh.
