SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University ice hockey team is set to host its first home contest in school history on Friday, October 31, at 7:00 p.m. against Sacred Heart. The game will be held at Tennity Ice Pavilion; the home of Orange ice hockey.
Admission to all home games at Tennity Ice Pavilion will be free to the general public. Due to current bleacher capacity, only 450 spectators will be allowed into the game. There will be two primary lots in which spectators can park, both located off of Skytop Road on South Campus. The first option is the parking lot behind the SU Softball Stadium fence. Cars can turn left on Lambreth Lane and then use the sidewalk that leads to the front door of the facility. Fans can also park in the 621 Skytop lot, just past Tennity Ice Pavilion to the left off of Skytop Road.
Syracuse is fresh off its first victory this season after shutting out Quinnipiac, 2-0, on Saturday, October 18.
Skate with Otto
In celebration of SU's historic day, kids will be able to skate with Otto before the game and in between periods during Friday night's contest on Tennity Ice Pavilion' auxiliary rink. Parents will be able to rent skates at the front office. Otto will be available to skate with the children prior to the game starting at 6 p.m.
Stick-or-Treat
In an effort to support Syracuse's first home ice hockey game in school history, the 'Student Athletes Across Borders' (SAAB) organization is hosting the 'Stick-or-Treat' event at the game. SAAB will be in attendance on Halloween night and will have a number of activities planned for children in attendance. There will be games set up on the concourse and a chance to win prizes for creative Halloween costumes. During the game, the student-organization will pass out Halloween candy to those in attendance.
In addition to the entertainment put on for any children at the game, SAAB has organized a pumpkin carving contest for the other varsity teams within the athletics department. The winner of the best pumpkin will be announced during the game that night.
Home-Based History
The Syracuse ice hockey team was road-tested immediately in its inaugural season by playing its first seven games in someone else's backyard. In three weeks, SU has traveled from Central New York to Pittsburgh, Pa. and then to Southern Connecticut. Finally, the Orange can play a couple of games in the comfort of its own rink on campus, the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Friday night's game against Sacred Heart denotes the first time in Syracuse University history a varsity ice hockey game will be contested on campus. SU plays 10 games at the Tennity Ice Pavilion and two tilts downtown at the Onondaga County War Memorial, home of the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. The Orange opposes Mercyhurst on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m. and St. Anselm on Saturday, February 21 at 2 p.m. for the two downtown featured events.
Breaking the Ice in the Win Column
Powered by goals from Syracuse's co-captains Julie Rising and Stefanie Marty, coupled with Lucy Schoedel's first shutout as the Orange goaltender, the SU ice hockey team made history Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18, by recording the program's first victory at Quinnipiac, 2-0. Rising not only scored her first goal for Syracuse, but found the back of the net for what proved to be the Orange's first game-winning goal in school history. Sophomore forward Rebecca Gordon fed Rising the puck, putting her in position to blast it in at 2:51 of the first period. Freshman forward Kylie Klassen was also credited with the assist. Gordon registered her first point for the Orange on Rising's breakthrough marker.
Schoedel Shutout
Lucy Schoedel attained the program's first victory and shutout against the Bobcats. It was her sixth career blanking. Schoedel turned away 19 shots in the contest to set her SU career total at 189 saves. The Orange netminder recorded five shutouts in her last two seasons at the University of New Hampshire. Schoedel has compiled 398:32 minutes of play, allowing 3.16 goals per game. Her save percentage rests at .900.
A New Point Leader Emerges
Freshman Lisa Mullan tallied two assists in the first game against Quinnipiac to take over the Orange points lead. Mullan's two assists in one game is not only the first multiple-assist game in SU history, but marked Mullan's team-leading fifth point. Mullan has four total helpers on the season. She was awarded assists at Colgate and at Robert Morris. The winger's first-career goal was part of her initial two-point game against Robert Morris, one of two Orange skaters to record the first two-point game in SU history.
On the Rise
Sophomore Julie Rising put forth a strong showing in the weekend series at Quinnipiac. SU's co-captain registered her first point for the Orange in Friday's match by assisting linemate Cheyenne Bojeski on her first collegiate tally. Rising continued her point streak by recording SU's first game-winning goal on Saturday against the Bobcats. She leads the Orange offense with 19 shot attempts.
Orange All-Access will feature live video of Syracuse's historic first game.
Syracuse will play its second home tilt of the weekend on Saturday, November 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion against Sacred Heart.
