Historic Orange Concludes Regular Season at BIG EAST foe Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The third-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team (17-1, 4-1) concludes the regular season at RV Rutgers (13-5, 1-4) on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m.
Syracuse remains at No. 3 for the second week in a row. Last week, Syracuse defeated No. 14 Boston College 3-1 on October 26 and Villanova 5-0 on October 24. SU’s win against BC was its sixth against a nationally ranked opponent, while the Orange earned their eighth shutout of the year against the Wildcats. Sophomore back Maggie Befort was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after leading a defense that only allowed one goal, seven penalty corners and 11 shots in two games.
Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor’s 67 points and 25 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her 15 assists rank tied for fourth on Syracuse’s single-season list. Taylor’s points and goals are both Syracuse senior records. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica’s 55 points rank second, behind Taylor, on SU’s single-season list. Her 25 assists is a Syracuse single-season record. Loncarica’s points, goals and assists are all Syracuse freshmen records. Senior goalkeeper Heather Hess ranks fifth on SU’s career saves list with 330. Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad’s 39 points rank fifth on the Orange single-season list. Her 16 goals are also tied for fifth (Megan Koons, 1997) on the single-season chart. Conrad’s 39 points are a Syracuse sophomore record. Her 16 goals are tied with Koons for first on the Orange sophomore chart. Befort’s 20 assists rank second, behind Loncarica, on SU’s single-season chart and her 32 career helpers are third on Syracuse’s career list.
Syracuse and Rutgers meet for the 21st time with the Orange boasting a 14-6 advantage. SU has won the last four meetings, including last season’s 2-1 win in Syracuse. The Orange is 5-3 all time in New Jersey.
Christina Puggi recorded five brilliant saves and Gloria Nantulya scored twice as Syracuse opened the BIG EAST schedule with a 2-1 victory against Rutgers on September 14, 2007 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Rutgers outshot the Orange, 14-10, and held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Rutgers went 1-1 last week. Rutgers rolled past Bryant 6-0 on October 26 after six different players scored for the Scarlet Knights in their fourth shutout of the season. Heather Garces grabbed her first goal of the season in the second half to take a 5-0 lead. Rutgers has tallied 51 goals on the season. The program record is 56 set in 1994. On October 25, Rutgers lost to No. 6 Connecticut, 4-2. Melissa Bowman and senior forward Karen Brewster scored the two goals for Rutgers. Amy Lewis has recorded a team-best 54 points and 24 goals. Both totals are second in the BIG EAST to SU’s Shannon Taylor. Jenna Hoh has dished out a team-best 10 assists. Lauren Decerbo has seen the majority of action in the cage, registering a 1.65 goals-against-average and a .687 save percentage.
