SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After an exciting 3-1 win against UConn Friday night, the Syracuse University volleyball team looks to continue its five-game winning streak in a Sunday afternoon matchup with St. John’s. Action begins at 2 p.m. at Manley Field House.
SU’s winning streak began September 20 at the Colgate Invitational. Syracuse posted a 3-0 win against the Princeton Tigers and a 3-1 win against the Raiders. The Orange remained on the road for its next two matches. Up first was Cornell in a 6:30 matchup in Ithaca, N.Y. The Orange dominated from the first set and swept the Big Red, 3-0. The momentum carried over into Syracuse’s BIG EAST regular season opener at Rutgers where the team won the match in straight sets, 3-0.
On Friday, the Orange welcomed the Huskies of UConn to Manley Field House. Syracuse came out strong, winning the first two sets before the Huskies managed to grab a third set victory. However, it wouldn’t be enough to derail the Orange in its BIG EAST home opener, and SU would win, 3-1.
Scouting the Red Storm (October 5, 2 p.m.)
The Red Storm is 2-1 in conference play after facing Louisville, Cincinnati and Marquette. Marquette proved to be a tough opponent for the Red Storm Friday night. Despite 16 kills from senior Casie Brooks, St. John’s couldn’t overcome the Golden Eagles and lost, 3-1. St. John’s earned a 3-0 win against the Bearcats and a 3-2 victory against Louisville last weekend. Seniors Valeria Kovaleva and Brooks both posted double-doubles in the weekend’s matches.
St. John’s started off the 2008 season with four tournaments. In the season-opener at the Cal Molten Classic, the Red Storm posted its first win of 2008 versus San Jose State (3-1). The Red Storm went 2-1 when it traveled to the University of Maryland for the Springhill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational, the only loss coming versus Missouri. St. John’s then went 0-2 at the Ameritus Players Challenge and closed out its tournament season going 2-0 at the Black Bird Invitational at Long Island University.

Following Sunday’s match against St. John’s, the Orange heads back on the road to take on two more BIG EAST opponents. Up first is Georgetown on Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m. Syracuse will continue traveling south that weekend to Tampa, Fla. to take on South Florida on Sunday, October 12 at 2 p.m.
