
Orange Honored with a Program-Best Seven Mideast Region All-Americans

SYRACUSE – A program-best seven members of the Syracuse Orange field hockey team were named to the 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region Team. Syracuse placed a program-high five student-athletes on the first team and two on the second team. Seniors Shannon Taylor and Heather Hess, sophomore Lindsey Conrad and freshmen Martina Loncarica and Anne-Sophie Van der Post were SU’s first-team selections. Sophomore Maggie Befort and freshman Nicole Nelson were named to the second team. The 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-American Teams will be released on Monday, November 24.
Taylor was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. She was also the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a member of the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team. The midfielder was a two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and three-time BIG EAST Honor Roll member. Taylor is first in the country in points and goals per game, 12th in assists per game. Taylor’s 79 points and 31 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her point total ranks tied for eighth (Jodie Carter, 1992-95) on SU’s career list and her 14 assists rank third on Syracuse’s single-season list. Taylor’s points and goals are both Syracuse senior records.
Hess was named to the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. She was also a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team and ALL-BIG EAST Tournament Team. The senior was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice during the season. She is fourth in the country in goals-against-average and sixth in saves percentage. Hess ranks fifth on SU’s career saves list with 359.
Conrad was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and All-BIG EAST Tournament Team. The forward was a two-time BIG EAST Honor Roll member. She is ranked 19th in the country in points per game and goals per game. Conrad’s 47 points rank fourth on the Orange single-season list and her 19 goals third on the single-season chart. Both are sophomore records.
Loncarica was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The midfielder was a two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and one time member of the BIG EAST Honor Roll. She is first in the country in assists per game, fourth in points per game and 33rd in goals. Loncarica’s 69 points rank second, behind Taylor, on SU’s single-season list. Her 31 assists is a Syracuse single-season record and third on SU’s career chart. Loncarica’s points, goals (17) and assists are all Syracuse freshmen records.
Van der Post was member of the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team. The back was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll three times and BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week once. She is tied for third in the BIG EAST in defensive saves.
Befort was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. The back was a two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and two-time BIG EAST Honor Roll member. She is ranked fourth in the country in assists per game and 31st in points per game. Befort’s 25 assists rank second, behind Loncarica, on SU’s single-season chart and her 36 career helpers are the most in Syracuse history. Her 41 points this season rank tied for six (Kelly Hambleton) on SU’s single season chart.
Nelson has recorded 15 points off six goals and three assists. She has played in all 23 games, starting six. The freshman scored the game-winning goal in SU’s 3-2 overtime win against No. 9 Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The third-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (22-1) will make its first appearance advanced to its first NCAA National Semifinal by posting two victories last weekend. The Orange plays the second-ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest (21-3) on Friday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that contest will play the winner of the Maryland-Iowa (Friday, November 21 at 5 p.m.) for the NCAA Division I National Championship on Sunday, November 23 at 1 p.m. The Final Four will be held at Trager Stadium on the University of Louisville campus.
