Orange Welcomes Oakland to the Carrier Dome for the First Time Friday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (2-0) will take on Oakland (1-1) for the first time in school history on Friday, Nov. 21 when the Golden Grizzlies invade the Carrier Dome for a 7 p.m. contest. Syracuse is looking to extend its winning streak to three games after victories against Le Moyne and Richmond in its first two games of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.
Tickets for Friday’s game are available online, by phone through Ticketmaster in the Syracuse area at (315) 472-0700, or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office. Fans not in attendance can watch the game live locally on Time Warner 26, or listen to the action via the Syracuse ISP Sports Network and its flagship station TK 99 (99.5 FM). The audio and video streams of the broadcast will also be available on SUathletics.com as part of Orange All Access.

The Orange is coming off a 76-71 come-from-behind win against Richmond on Nov. 18. The Orange trailed the Spiders by seven points early in the second half before junior Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.) netted 11 straight points to give the hosts a four-point advantage it never relinquished.

Devendorf finished with 22 points, including 18 in the second half. Sophomore Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored a game-high 27 points in the contest, one short of his career high. Junior Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.) added 17 points as the trio combined for 66 of Syracuse’s 76 points on the night.
Flynn leads the Orange in scoring at 22 points per game. Devendorf and Onuaku also boast double-figure scoring averages at 18 and 14.5 points per contest, respectively. Junior Paul Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) has been the team’s most consistent rebounder at 7.5 boards per game.
SYRACUSE AGAINST THE SUMMIT LEAGUE
Friday’s game against Oakland will be just its second against a current team from the Summit League and the first in the Jim Boeheim Era. The Orange’s only other matchup against a Summit League foe came in 1974 when it lost in overtime, 86-82, in the opening round of the 1974 NCAA Tournament.

Oakland lost its season opener to Cleveland State, 58-55, but picked up a big road victory by beating Oregon in overtime on Nov. 17, 82-79. Oakland overcame a five-point halftime deficit in the contest. Junior guard Johnathon Jones had 32 points, including 10 in the extra session. Senior backcourt mate Erik Kangas had 18 points and sophomore Keith Benson had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Jones (20.0 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) leads the team in scoring average and ranks second in rebounding despite his 5-11 frame. Kangas (14.5 ppg.) is the squad’s second-leading scorer and top 3-point threat with five triples to his credit after two games. Benson, a 6-11 center, tops the club with a 9.4 rebound mark and is averaging 12.5 points per game. The Grizzlies are without Derick Nelson, the club’s top returning scorer and rebounder, who is out with a foot injury.
Oakland coach Greg Kampe is in his 25th season at the helm. He brings a career record of 397-302 into the matchup. The Golden Grizzlies were 17-14 a season and split two games in the Summit League Tournament.
