
Orange Swimmers Fare Well in Day One of Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – At the close of day one of the Gamecock Invitational on the campus of the University of South Carolina, the Orange men are in fourth place with 109 points and the Orange women are in fifth with 107 points. So far, two individuals and three relay teams captured times good enough to qualify for the S.C. Nationals which take place Dec. 4-7 in Atlanta, Ga.

So far, two individuals and three relay teams captured times good enough to qualify for the S.C. Nationals which take place Dec. 4-7 in Atlanta, Ga.
For the men, junior Boldiszar Kiss finished eighth with a time of 1:52.92 in the 200 IM. It was a season best. He beat the S.C. Nationals qualifying time by .07 of a second (1:52.99). Syracuse had two men’s relay teams capture times good enough to be able to go to the S.C. Nationals. The 400 Medley Relay team of sophomores Berk Kahraman and Kuba Kotynia, Kiss and junior Alexander Taraskin finished at 3:21.00 on the dot, while the team of junior Arda Isiskalan and seniors Matthew Gerlach, Peter Gollands and Matthew Brock recorded a time of 3:32.36.
Kahraman also competed in the 200 IM recording a season-best time of 1:54.11. Joining him was Kotynia whose time of 1:53.72 in the 200 IM was the fastest he has swam that event this year. Taraksin rounded out the men’s performances on Thursday, registering season-best times in both the 500 free (4:36.19) and 50 free (21.48).
Sophomore Katlin O’Hara secured a spot at the S.C. Nationals after day one of the Gamecock Invitational in the 50 free. She had a time of 23.87, .02 ahead of the qualifying time of 23.89. The 400 Medley Relay team comprised of seniors Catrina Roth and Dani Stein, sophomore Natalie Mazzetta and O’Hara finished at 3:51.79 to be the final team to qualify for the S.C. Nationals on the first day at the invitational.
Junior Carolyn Delkus finished sixth in the 50 free at a clip of 24.68., 0.56 faster than her previous 2008-09 season-best. Senior Sarah Manning and Mazzetta both posted 2008-09 bests in the 500 free. Mazzetta finished in 4:57.34 and Manning finished in 5:00.63. Roth competed in the 200 IM for the Orange women recording a time of 2:06.52.
Syracuse swimming and diving is back in action tomorrow for day two of the Gamecock Invitational. Prelims for individual events begin at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m. All action will take place in the Carolina Natatorium.
