Men's Basketball Wraps Up Exhibition Action Versus Indiana University of Pennsylvania Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange men’s basketball team will conclude its preseason schedule on Sunday, Nov. 9, with an exhibition game against Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
Tickets for Sunday’s exhibition are available online, by phone through Ticketmaster in the Syracuse area at (315) 472-0700, or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office. Fans not in attendance can watch the game live on Time Warner 26 in the Syracuse area or listen to the action via the Syracuse ISP Radio Network and its flagship TK 99 (99.5 FM). Sunday’s contest is Syracuse’s second exhibition match of 2008-09 season. The Orange opened its preseason schedule on Nov. 3 with a 77-56 victory against Cal State-Los Angeles. Syracuse outscored the Golden Eagles, 43-26, in the second half to turn a four-point game into a rout.

Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) tallied 13 points and six assists in the win. Flynn hit a pair of 3-pointers in his 28 minutes on the floor and was 5-for-10 overall from the field. He was matched on the score sheet by Arinze Onuaku (Lanham, Md.) who also tallied 13 points, along with three blocks and eight rebounds. Onuaku connected on all six of his field-goal attempts and added a made free throw.
The Orange welcomed guards Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.) and Andy Rautins (Jamesville, N.Y.) back from serious knee injuries on Monday. The duo received 25 and 18 minutes of floor time, respectively. Devendorf recorded five points and a team-high seven assists, while Rautins added six points and one helper.

The Crimson Hawks are coming off a 13-15 campaign. They were 5-7 in PSAC play last year and finished fourth in the West Division. IUP returns four starters, led by PSAC West Rookie of the Year Darryl Webb who led the Crimson Hawks in scoring (16.5 ppg.) and rebounding (8.5 rpg.). Sean Christiansen (12.8 ppg) and preseason all-league pick Gerald Brooks (12.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg) also return. The trio will be joined by a pair of players who redshirted last year in guard Thomas Young, a junior transfer from UMBC, and redshirt freshman guard Julian Sanders, who led his prep team to a state championship as a senior.

Joe Lombardi is in his third season as head coach at IUP and he owns a 19-36 overall record. He took over the Crimson Hawks in 2005-06 after serving as an assistant coach on Jamie Dixon’s staff at Pitt for three seasons. The Panthers earned three NCAA bids during Lombardi’s time with the Panthers and he helped guide the club to the 2004 BIG EAST Championship.
Lombardi spent 11 seasons in the Atlantic 10 before his appointment at Pitt. He worked as an assistant at St. Bonaventure (1992-01) and LaSalle (2001-03).
