SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team has mounted some momentum heading into BIG EAST battle, finishing off Princeton, 70-61, on Tuesday afternoon to remain unblemished at home en route to an 11-2 overall record in non-conference action. Three Syracuse student-athletes have already made their impressions felt on the BIG EAST this season by garnering spots on the weekly Honor Roll.
Senior guard Chandrea Jones, junior guard Juanita Ward and sophomore guard Erica Morrow have all been tabbed to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this year with Jones bearing the award in the first two weeks of the season.
Jones was penciled onto the first Honor Roll of the season after a radiant display in her first four games. In the Orange's first outing at Siena on November 14, she topped her career high by draining a game-high 33 points. At University of Maryland Eastern Shore on November 16, she posted her ninth-career double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with 16 points and two steals. In SU's third contest as Ohio State on November 19, Jones logged a career-high five steals and sunk a game-best five free throws to accompany her 14 points and four offensive boards. Syracuse's first home game versus Portland State on November 22 featured 24 points and 13 rebounds from Jones.
Jones' two weekly BIG EAST laurels this year extends her career total to six. The Baltimore, Md. was named to last year's notable listing four times on December 10, December 31, January 22 and February 25.
Ward, a third-year transfer student from Odessa College, picked up her first-career conference accolade for her gutsy performance against Niagara on December 14. Ward tied a career-best with 20 points and set a career-high with five steals. Ward and Jones are currently tied atop the rebounding list this season, both averaging 8.8 boards per game.
Morrow's game-ending heroics at St. Bonaventure produced her first listing to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native totaled 23 points in 29 minutes, to go along with four rebounds, two steals and two assists. It marks her second-career naming to the list as she collected her first award on March 3 last season.
Morrow has scored at least 15 points in her last six games and has tallied 23 and 21 points, respectively, in her last two games.
Third-year head coach Quentin Hillsman is 2-0 in BIG EAST openers and 13-19 overall. Last year, he led the Orange to its first NCAA tournament berth last year since the 2001-02 season. Hillsman has compiled a 42-31 record through Tuesday's victory.
After completing the non-conference part of the schedule, Syracuse readies itself for BIG EAST Conference play. The Orange initiates league play in our nation’s capital on Saturday, January 3 at Georgetown. SU’s first tip of the New Year is slated for 3 pm at McDonough Gymnasium. The Orange returns home to square off against No. 15 Rutgers on Tuesday, January 6 at 7 pm.
