SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Erica Morrow reached double figures in scoring for the third straight game, pouring in 19 points to lead No. 21/23 Syracuse in its 79-67 loss to No. 16/16 Notre Dame in front of 3,013 fans in the Carrier Dome on Saturday. The Orange’s record goes to 19-5 overall, 7-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Fighting Irish improve to 20-5 overall, 8-3 in league play.
Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead before the Orange fought its way back and took its first lead of the game on Morrow’s three-point basket with 8:18 remaining in the half. Notre Dame responded with a 7-1 scoring run and went on to a 30-27 halftime lead. Nicole Michael led Syracuse with 11 first-half points, the final two coming on a rebound and putback with 47 seconds left on the clock. Morrow added eight points in the first 20 minutes.
In a back-and-forth second half, the teams were knotted at 44-44 with 12:46 remaining. Notre Dame outscored the Orange 12-5 during the next three minutes to equal its largest lead of the game. The Irish maintained the seven-point advantage until Vionca Murray’s two free throws started the Orange on a 10-2 scoring run to give SU a 61-60 lead with 5:12 left on the clock. The teams again traded baskets, and Chandrea Jones’ three-point play with 3:04 remaining tied the score at 64-64. Notre Dame held the Orange scoreless for the next 2:44 while building a 10-point lead. The Irish were 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 1:20 to seal the victory.
Morrow led a group of four Orange to reach double figures in scoring. Michael finished with 14 points, while Vaida Sipaviciute tied her season high with 12 points. Fantasia Goodwin added 10 points off the bench. Charel Allen led Notre Dame with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The crowd of 3,013 is the ninth-largest in the program’s history and marks the fourth straight home game that more than 3,000 fans have gathered to watch the Orange play in the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse goes for its 20th win of the season on Tuesday when it travels to Providence to take on the Friars at 7 p.m.
