Syracuse Lays Perfect BIG EAST Record On Line Against DePaul, Marquette

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse tennis team, winners of two straight and three of its last four matches, heads to Milwaukee, Wis. for a two-match BIG EAST weekend against No. 69 DePaul and Marquette. The Orange meets the Blue Demons on Saturday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) and the Golden Eagles on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (ET). Both matches will be played at the Helfaer Tennis Center. Syracuse is a perfect 4-0 against BIG EAST teams this season.

Orange Rewind
The Orange completed its second-consecutive three-match weekend with a 2-1 record, including two wins against BIG EAST foes Seton Hall and Connecticut. Syracuse suffered a narrow 4-3 loss at Ivy League opponent Cornell. Against the Big Red, second-year SU head coach Luke Jensen introduced the Orange’s new doubles pairings.
Against the Pirates, Syracuse rolled to a commanding 7-0 sweep at the Drumlins Tennis Center, its second of the 2008 season. Syracuse improved to 3-0 in BIG EAST play. Sophomore Ashley Spicer continued her stellar singles play, collecting her team-leading seventh win. Junior Maria Vasilyeva and freshman Jacquelynn Tang totaled their second doubles win in as many matches.
Versus the rival Huskies, the Orange collected a convincing 6-1 triumph, its second victory away from home in 2008. Syracuse’s conference record remained flawless at 4-0 following the win. Spicer’s 6-0, 6-1 victory was her eighth in the last nine matches. Tang and freshman team captain Christina Tan improved their singles’ marks to 7-3.
DePaul (7-3)
The Blue Demons meet the Orange in Milwaukee as winners in seven of their first 10 matches, including a 6-1 win at BIG EAST foe St. John’s. Against the Red Storm, DePaul tallied two wins in doubles action before winning five of six singles matches. Kirsten Gambrell powered the Blue Demons singles’ attack with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Gambrell teamed with Dunja Antunovic for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 in doubles. Selma Salkovic owns a 9-1 singles mark, including a 6-0 showcase at No. 3. Beatrix Csordas is a perfect 4-0. DePaul, ranked No. 69 by ITA, is the first ranked opponent for the Orange this season. Syracuse claimed a commanding 7-0 sweep against the Blue Demons in 2007.
Marquette (3-7)
The Golden Eagles welcome DePaul and Syracuse to the Helfaer Tennis Center with a 3-7 record, including two consecutive wins against Northern Iowa and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Rookie Rachael Hush owns a 5-2 singles mark while Robin Metzler is 4-2. Maria Calbeto and Christina Ruiz, and Hush and Erin Watkins are 4-3 in doubles play. Marquette collected a narrow 4-3 win at the Drumlins Tennis Center last season.
What’s Ahead
Following the Orange’s weekend-swing in Milwaukee, SU continues a season-long six-match road trip at non-conference foes Yale and Brown on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2, respectively.
